Low Crown, Mid Crown, High Crown: The Golf Hat Fit Guide Nobody Wrote
Share
Here's a thing nobody tells you when you start golfing: the hat matters more than the driver. The driver you'll replace in three years anyway. The hat is on your head every single round, in every single photo, and for some reason the entire industry acts like one shape fits every skull on earth.
It doesn't. We started ParBird because the two of us have different heads and could never find hats that worked for both of us. So we built hats in three crown heights and named them after birds, because golf hats should be fun and we were tired of pretending otherwise.
This is the guide we wish existed. No fluff. Here's how crown height actually works and which one you should be wearing.
First, what "crown" even means
The crown is the part of the hat that sits on your head. Everything above the bill. Crown height is how tall that part is, from the sweatband to the button on top.
Low crown sits close to your head. High crown stands up and gives you some stature. Mid crown is the one you've been wearing your whole life without thinking about it.
That's the entire concept. The reason it matters is that your head and face have proportions, and a hat either agrees with those proportions or fights them. When a hat fights you, you can tell. It looks "off" and you can't say why. That's crown height, ninety percent of the time.
One more thing on vocabulary. If you've seen "low profile," "low pro," "shallow fit," "deep fit," "tall crown," or "regular fit" on a hat, that's all this same conversation. Low profile is low crown. Deep fit is high crown. Regular is mid. We wrote a plain-English version of this guide if you'd rather skip the hat-speak entirely.
Low crown: for guys who think most hats look like a bucket on them
If you've ever put on a hat and immediately thought "why do I look like a mascot," you probably want a low crown.
Low crowns sit tight to the head, hug the forehead, and keep the whole silhouette sleek. They're the hat equivalent of a tailored polo instead of the free one from the member-guest. Guys with rounder faces, shorter faces, or just less head above the ears tend to love them. So does basically everyone with a ponytail, which is why our women's styles lean low.
ParBird low crowns: The Low Harpy Snap (rope snapback, our newest), The Eagle (the USA flag patch one, you've seen it), The Peregrine (performance, no rope), and The Nightingale (women's).
Mid crown: the classic, and the one most people should start with
Mid crown is the standard golf hat profile. It's what the pros wear on Sunday, it's what your dad wore, and it's what works for the widest range of heads. If you have no idea what your crown preference is, start here. Honestly, start here even if you think you know.
It's not boring. It's correct. There's a difference.
ParBird mid crowns: The Harpy Snap (our signature rope snapback, most colorways in the lineup), The Harpy Snap Rubber Patch, The Condor, The Harpy Velcro, and The Osprey (performance).
High crown: for the guys every other hat sits too shallow on
Some heads are tall. Some faces are long. Some guys have a lot of hair and a strong opinion about keeping it. For all of those people, a standard hat perches on top like it's scared of commitment, it looks goofy, and they've spent their whole lives thinking they "don't look good in hats."
You look fine in hats. You've been wearing the wrong crown.
A high crown has extra depth. It sits down properly, it gives taller faces something to balance against, and it has that structured, slightly throwback look that the rope hat crowd has fallen back in love with.
ParBird high crowns: The High Harpy Snap (rope) and The Phoenix (our premium performance hat).
The 30-second test
Put on whatever hat you own right now. Look in a mirror. Ask yourself one question: does the hat look like it's sitting on me, or like it's wearing me?
- Looks tall, bulky, or like there's too much hat above your eyebrows: go lower.
- Looks like it's perched on top and could blow off on the 7th tee: go higher.
- Looks fine and you've never thought about it: you're a mid. Congratulations, you're easy to shop for.
Still not sure? We built a quiz for exactly this. It takes four questions and it's weirdly accurate. Find Your Fit here.
"But what about my actual head size?"
Every adult ParBird hat is adjustable. Snapback, velcro, doesn't matter. Circumference is a solved problem. Crown height is the thing nobody solved, which is why we're the ones writing this article instead of a company that's been around since the Eisenhower administration.
The one exception: kids. The Weebill is built for junior golfers and it's the only hat we make in a youth size. It's also adjustable, because kids grow and hats are forty-five bucks.
The short version
Low crown if hats look big on you. High crown if hats look shallow on you. Mid crown if you've never once thought about this and you're annoyed we made you think about it now.
