Snapback vs. Velcro vs. Fitted: Settling the Golf Hat Closure Debate
Share
Every group chat has had this argument. Snapback guys think velcro is for dads. Velcro guys think snapbacks are for teenagers. Fitted guys are quietly confident until the first week of August, when their hat is two shades darker from sweat and will never fit the same again.
We make snapbacks and velcros. We don't make fitted. Here's the honest breakdown of all three, including the one we don't sell.
Snapback
Plastic strap in the back, seven or eight snaps, adjust in half a second. The snapback is the default closure of the modern rope hat for good reason: it's structured, it holds its shape, it survives the two or three guys in your group who keep "borrowing" it, and the contrast-color snap is a legitimately fun design detail. (Ours match the rope. Pink rope, pink snap. Seafoam rope, seafoam snap. We're a little obsessive.)
Best for: anyone who wants the classic structured golf hat look and doesn't want to think about sizing. All ParBird snapbacks are here.
The knock: snapbacks can leave a little gap at the back. On most heads it's invisible. On very small heads you might notice it, which is why we built a low crown version (The Low Harpy Snap) that sits tighter.
Velcro
Fabric strap, hook-and-loop closure, infinitely adjustable instead of in snap-sized steps. Velcro gets a bad rap because of the 90s, but a velcro rope hat in 2026 is a sneaky-great look. It's a little more old-school than the snapback and sits a touch lower on the back of the head because there's no plastic strap.
Best for: guys who want the exact right tightness, guys with longer hair who hate the snapback gap, and anyone going for the throwback vibe. The Harpy Velcro is our version, mid crown, rope across the bill.
The knock: velcro wears out over the years. A good one lasts a long time. A cheap one lasts a season.
Fitted
No closure at all. Sized to your head in eighths of an inch. The fitted hat is the cleanest look in theory and the most frustrating in practice, because your head isn't the same size on a cold morning and a humid afternoon, your hat definitely isn't the same size after it gets rained on, and if you buy one online you're guessing.
We don't make fitted hats, and it's not an accident. Our whole thing is fit, and we think crown height solves 90 percent of what people are actually chasing when they go fitted. An adjustable hat in the right crown height beats a fitted hat in the wrong one every single time.
The ParBird take
Snapback if you want the modern rope hat look and easy adjustability. Velcro if you want old-school and precise. Skip fitted unless you have a very stable head and a very stable climate.
And whichever closure you pick, get the crown right first. That's the actual fit decision. Here's the crown guide, or let the Fit Finder do it for you in four questions.
